49ers fire head coach Jim Tomsula

And that's that. The San Francisco 49ers announced Sunday evening that Jim Tomsula has been fired as head coach. Jed York released the following statement:

"Jimmy has been a valuable member of the 49ers organization for the last nine years. We all know he is a man of high character, and his contributions on the field and in our community have always been greatly appreciated. This entire organization is proud and grateful to have worked so closely alongside Jimmy. We all wish him and his family great success in the future."

There had been some rumblings he might be out this weekend, but the media reports really picked up Sunday morning. Pro Football Talk was the first to report, followed by Jason Cole and Jay Glazer. Now it's official.

The 49ers will likely hold an end-of-season press conference on Monday to discuss the firing. Well, I would hope they do, but we'll see. In the meantime, the coaching search will begin in earnest. We'll have plenty more on the second head coach search in as many years.
