Golden Nuggets: Coaching Search Begins

Wednesday, January 6th, 2016 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Now that Jed York has decided to eat the rest of Jim Tomsula's contract and part ways, the 49ers are now searching for their next head coach. Jed stressed the need for someone who can win a Super Bowl. He said that Trent Baalke, who will remain as GM, will lead the search for the head coach and will have all the resources to get the job right. The coach most people think the Niners will target is an offensive minded coach. There are a few candidates out there.

The 1st person to be approached is Hue Jackson. Hue is the hot offensive coordinator of this season. He was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders for one season and ended that season 8-8. He is the OC for the Cincinnati Bengals and has helped Andy Dalton develop as a quarterback. His reputation as a developer of quarterbacks and offensive minded coach are the biggest reasons that he is a target for the 49ers. With the Niners holding the #7 overall pick in the draft, the team could pick a quarterback that Hue can help develop as their franchise quarterback.

The coach every team with a coaching vacancy, including the 49ers, are interested in is the Saints Sean Payton. He is an offensive genius and his Saints teams have been at the top of most offensive categories since he arrived. He has also won a Super Bowl, which Jed said is what he wanted in a head coach. The Niners have the money to pay his top of the NFL head coaching salary, the problem becomes that he is still under contract with New Orleans. If the Saints do not part ways with him, the Niners would have to make a trade to acquire his services and the question becomes what do they want for him.

These next few weeks will be interesting to see what coaches speak with the Niners, but as Jed said, they have to make this pick right.
