Good morning! The San Francisco 49ers head coach search enters day three on Thursday. I thought about including Monday as part of it, but with Jed York and Trent Baalke both speaking that day, we'll stick with day three.
Wednesday was an informative day. Sean Payton announced that he was sticking around in New Orleans for now. I say "for now" because it felt in some regards like he is still sort of hedging his bets for the future. For now though he is off the 49ers radar. The team has scheduled interviews with Buffalo Bills assistant Anthony Lynn for later today, and Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson for Sunday. There are reports of discussions with Mike Shanahan, but nothing more specific. There are reports of coach side interest from Chip Kelly and Mike Holmgren, but nothing beyond that.
The coaching search continues on, and I have to think this goes deep into next week at the very least. It will be interesting to see how things go with Jackson. He is an offensive mind with a year of head coaching experience in Oakland. He had some issues in Oakland that led to his departure, and I'll have more on that later today, and then this weekend. But if he's learned from those issues, he could make for a very attractive candidate.
