The San Francisco 49ers head into the 2016 offseason with plenty of roster questions, and they start at the most important position. The 49ers have three quarterbacks under contract right now: Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, and Dylan Thompson. Gabbert is signed for one more year, Thompson is coming off a rookie year spent primarily on the 49ers practice squad, and we have heard plenty about the Colin Kaepernick situation.
The 49ers hold the No. 7 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, up to 12 picks total, and a whole lot of cap room. Odds seem pretty good they will find a quarterback, but it is not entirely clear how that will play out. Fortunately, there could be one option available: Johnny Football!
Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is having a train wreck of a season, and odds seem pretty good he will play his way out of the league, at least for this coming year. He has found himself in numerous situations that do not reflect particularly well on him, and on Thursday, LeBron James' marketing agency dropped Manziel as a client.
Our friends at Bovada recently posted some odds about where Johnny Manziel will be Week 1 of the 2016 regular season. The Dallas Cowboys are installed as the favorite at 2/1, with remaining in Cleveland installed at 6/1. The 49ers are listed at 10/1, while out of the league entirely is listed at 7/1.
I can't imagine many people realistically see Manziel ending up with the 49ers. He's got some talent, but even when he has been on the field, he's been wildly inconsistent. I would not be surprised if there was an offensive coordinator or head coach out there that thinks they can turn him around. And he was with the Browns, so it's not like he was in an ideal situation for growth. The Cowboys make all kinds of sense at this point, but not on an NFL team could be a good sleeper wager.
