Fooch's update: Sounds like the meeting happened on Thursday.
And just like that, we've got another big name in the mix. The San Francisco 49ers have met with former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, according to Matt Maiocco. The news comes a few days after we first heard that Chip Kelly had reached out to the 49ers.
Kelly would certainly be an intriguing presence, but times have changed since he first joined the Philadelphia Eagles. Things ended up poorly, with his firing shortly before the season concluded. There were reports he wanted more personnel power, but then he told Jay Glazer he just wanted to coach. He is a big personality, and it would make for an interesting dynamic in Santa Clara. The 49ers do have Tom Gamble on the payroll, and he is reportedly friendly with Kelly. Their relationship is tough to figure out given that Kelly reportedly did not fight too much to save Gamble's job in Philly early last year, but who knows what's going on.
The 49ers met with Anthony Lynn on Thursday, and are set to meet with Hue Jackson on Sunday. There has been some talk the 49ers were interested in David Shaw, but that was quickly shot down. They also reportedly contacted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to speak with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, but have not been granted permission yet.
