Add another offensive mind to the San Francisco 49ers coaching search. Matt Barrows wrote this morning that the 49ers have requested to interview Mike Shula from the Carolina Panthers. Here's what Barrows had to say in the article:
The team also has inquired about Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula, whose agent has said that he will not interview for openings while Carolina still is in the playoffs.
Shula has had great success this year working with Cam Newton, as the Panthers quarterback is topping many lists for MVP of the 2015 season. Prior to being offensive coordinator, Mike Shula was the quarterbacks coach for the Panthers and also for the Jacksonville Jaguars. While in Jacksonville, quarterback David Garrard had one of his best years as a pro. In 2007, Shula's first year with the Jaguars, Garrard threw for a passer rating of 102.2, ranked third in the NFL.Shula's last head coaching job was for Alabama in 2006.
With Hue Jackson of the Cincinnati Bengals and now Mike Shula being sought after, the coaching hire may take a bit longer than expected if both coaches' teams make a deep run into the playoffs. If either of those coaches are who you want, you might have to make a decision on who to root for this weekend.
