Golden Nuggets: The Contract To Decide Starter

It looks like Colin Kaepernick’s time as the starting QB is coming really soon. News that the 49ers and Colin were in talks of restructuring his current deal came out during the weekend. It looked like the team was reluctant to play him due to the chance he gets injured and they are on the hook for quite a bit of money next season. If they restructure to take that component out, the team will likely play him.

If Colin does get the next start, the 49ers will have more ability to throw downfield. Blaine Gabbert didn’t seem comfortable doing that and when he did, he wasn’t able to complete passes. Colin is willing to throw downfield and has the arm strength to do it. Blaine won the starting job originally because Colin was not able to practice until late in the offseason due to his rehab following surgeries. Colin was behind in learning Chip Kelly’s offense and Blaine seemed to have a good grasp of it. But Blaine has not played well enough to keep the starting job.

The 49ers coaching staff will discuss who should start the next game against Buffalo. Chip is in no hurry to name a starter so it will be a waiting game to see who it is.
