Welcome back for another week of football! The San Francisco 49ers are back in action after a ten-day layoff and face the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park. The game kicks off at 10:00 am PT on FOX with Dick Stockton, David Diehl, and Kristina Pink on the call. It’s a primarily regional broadcast, which I broke down here.
The 49ers enter the game at 1-4 and in the midst of a four-game losing streak. Chip Kelly decided on a major change this week, switching from Blaine Gabbert at quarterback to Colin Kaepernick. This marks Kaepernick’s first start since Week 8 of last season. Kaepernick later underwent surgeries on his shoulder, thumb, and knee. The surgeries cost him time in the offseason, which was a big reason he lost the offseason QB competition to Gabbert. While the 49ers got a win in Week 1, things went south in a hurry as the offense could not find consistency. And so, a change has been made, with Kelly looking for some kind of spark.
The 49ers head into the game with Jimmie Ward out this week due to his quadricep injury. He is likely going to miss next week as well, with the bye week hopefully able to get him enough time to full recover. The rest of the injury report includes Ahmad Brooks, DeForest Buckner, Glenn Dorsey, and Jaquiski Tartt listed as questionable. The team will announce their inactives at 8:30 a.m.
The Bills are on a roll heading into this game. They opened the season with two straight losses, but have since won three straight. They won a home game over the Arizona Cardinals 33-18, and then went into New England and Los Angeles for 16-0 and 30-19 wins, respectively. The defense and LeSean McCoy have been the two keys for the Bills leading up to this game.
The 49ers opened as 7.5-point underdogs, but the line has since climbed. It has gone as high as ten points, but most sportsbooks have it around nine points for the time being. I picked the Bills in my SuperContest picks, but I also did that in my part because I want that useless reverse jinx! I could see this game going one of two ways. Colin Kaepernick flashes, particularly on the ground, Carlos Hyde has a huge game, the defense plays well, and the 49ers spring an upset with a 10- or 14-point win. The other side is Kaepernick struggles to do much of anything, he gets sacked two or three times, LeSean McCoy shreds the defense, and they lose by two or three touchdowns (or more). Sure, there are other possibilities, but these seem like the two most likely options for the time being.
