Golden Nuggets: Is Smelter faster than a speeding bullet?

49ers links for October 21, 2016

As everyone knows by now, 6’-2” 226 pound DeAndre Smelter has recently joined the 49ers practice squad after recovering from an ACL tear and then hamstring problems earlier this year. Wait a second, he lost 15 pounds. If you happen to see it laying around, you may want to give him a call. Anyway, he is down to a svelte 210 pounds.

How fast is he? nfldraftscout has his times listed as (low 4.42), (time 4.52), (high 4.63) but I think it is all speculation. Bleacher Report calls him “big, fast, and productive”.

cbssports.com says:

STRENGTHS: Good-sized target with ideal build, physique and length for the position. Uses his body well to shield defenders. Large hands and catching radius to snare the ball away from his body, highpointing and securing.”

The most amazing part of Smelter may be his 11 inch paws. When I think mine are probably 7 inches, it amazes me that anyone could have hands that are 4 inches larger. Maybe he will fizzle out or maybe he ends up in the Hall of Fame, it is anybody’s guess. If I squint my eyes just right, I can totally imagine Trent Baalke and Jed York being his co presenters.
