Saints waiving Joe Callahan after claiming him 8 days ago

Maybe the 49ers try and claim him this week?

The New Orleans Saints claimed quarterback Joe Callahan off waivers eight days ago, and it appears they are set to also waive him, according to Mike Garafolo. The Green Bay Packers signed Callahan as a UDFA, and he impressed in training camp. They waived him to clear a roster spot, and hoped to sign him to their practice squad.

I do not believe the 49ers placed a waiver claim on Callahan a week ago, given that they would have had better waiver priority than the Saints. That would suggest they will not make a claim on him in the coming days, but I suppose anything is possible.

Eight days ago, the 49ers were a couple days into the new Colin Kaepernick era. They are likely to keep Kap in the lineup for at least a few more starts, but at some point they will need to figure out more of the future. If Kaepernick plays well, he likely opts out of his contract this coming offseason. If he is mediocre or worse as the season moves along, the 49ers likely release him and move on. So either way, he’s probably gone after this season. Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder are both free agents after this season as well, so the team needs bodies. It seems likely they draft a quarterback next April, but why not add a youngster like Callahan and just see what he can do?
