Fanposts: A vital part of the community.

Note: I published a fanpost almost identical a few months back. With the rash of fanposts as of late (which is a good thing!), I thought it would be a good time to bring this up again. Just remember these guidlelines as you make a fanpost. We want them to be informational and enjoyable, not only for you but for all of those reading them.

Welcome to Niners Nation, a blog dedicated to the San Francisco 49ers. There are many great articles published by a great staff. We also have a dedicated community here.

One of the great things about Niners Nation is the fanpost. This allows anybody in the community to publish their own post; they will be shown on the right side of the page. David Fucillo (aka Fooch) will on occasion move a fanpost to the "front page" of the website. Fanposts are great ways to present ideas, publish opinions, and bring other news that might have been missed by the NN staff.

Fooch's note: We have a lot of people who are interested in doing mock drafts. I'm going to create a "mock draft" thread for people to post their basic mocks. If you want to do a separate mock draft FanPost, it should go into more detail on the various picks and/or roster impact, and not just be a list of your picks with a quick intro.

I just wanted to quickly go over what a fanpost should contain.

  1. A fanpost should be over 150 words. Anything shorter would be better suited as either a comment or a fanshot. (More on fanshots later.)

  2. A fanpost is more than just a link or a list of draft picks. Bring your own thoughts and ideas into it. It’s ok to link to another news article or list your mock draft picks; just don’t make that your sole statement.

  3. Don’t copy other articles verbatim. If you get the info from somewhere, please give credit to the original guy. Provide a link to their article.

  4. All fanposts must follow community guidelines.

  5. Try to keep it related to the 49ers and football. If you do bring up something that may not be immediately obvious, let us know in your fanpost how it relates to the 49ers or football. FanPosts outside those two main topics (or connected in some way to them) will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Don’t be afraid to present your ideas though! We’ve had a Star Wars spoiler thread, threads about college basketball, and all sorts of other stuff, so there is room for that.

  6. Opinion pieces are encouraged. You do NOT have to follow what the majority says. Just be prepared for some debate.

Couple of other quick notes on fanposts.

  • Please try to use correct spelling, but don’t be bummed if you make a mistake. We won’t condemn you for misspelling words.

  • Please use paragraphs and try to use correct grammar. This isn’t because we want to be English majors; it’s to help others read it. Again, not something we will condemn you for.

  • If you do make a mistake and you realize it after you publish it, you can edit the fanpost. As the author you will see a gear symbol near the top of the page. If you click it, it gives you the option to edit. I find this handy when I post something and I realize that I spelled someone’s name wrong.

  • Don’t be discouraged if most don’t agree with you. My first fanpost was about how Jerry Rice should be our WR coach; I got a lot of comments about how great players typically can’t coach what made them great. (And after watching Singletary, I have to agree. Great player, not so great coach.)

  • Fanposts can be edited (yup, I said it twice). So, if you do the GREAT WALL OF TEXT and then realize it afterwords, you can go back in and make the edits. I can answer any basic technical questions, so feel free to ask if something in the formatting just geeks out.

  • If we feel it didn't meet up to minimum expectation, you will probably get a message from one of us with a few suggestions.

There may be times when all you have is a picture to post, or a link to publish. In this case, there is the fanshot option. This allows you to get a quick blurb out there about whatever. Some cool stuff down there.

Any questions feel free to ask anyone in the community. You can also email Fooch at ninersnation at gmail dot com. You can also email me at my username at gmail dot com.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.
