Gus Bradley, Todd Bowles top updated odds for first head coach to be fired

Chip Kelly is a little further down the list, and at this point seems unlikely to be the first coach fired.

It has been a rough year for Chip Kelly and the San Francisco 49ers, but oddsmakers do not think bettors will go in on Kelly being the first coach to get canned. Thanksgiving is almost at hand, which means somebody is probably going to get fired soon. There are plenty of questionable coaching situations, and a few more losses could be enough to break the seal on coach firings.

The folks at put together their odds for first head coach fired during the regular season. Gus Bradley (Jaguars) is the favorite at +160 (bet $100 to win $160), followed by Todd Bowles (Jets) and Marvin Lewis (Bengals) at +350. Hue Jackson gets the longest odds ahead of “no coach fired.”

Chip Kelly is seventh on the list, at +700. The 49ers could decide to completely blow things up and overhaul the front office and coaching staff. However, if they do that, it will not be until after the season ends. I don’t think it is a lock Chip Kelly is back in 2017, but I do think it’s effectively a lock that he finishes out the current season.

In Jacksonville, Shad Khan has said Bradley will not be fired. While that could change with further struggles, it seems like a sucker bet to put money on Bradley for the time being. Lewis is a tough one to fire right now in light of the injuries suffered this past week. The team was already struggling, but now they are without A.J. Green and Gio Bernard. It does not mean Lewis is untouchable, but I don’t see him being first to go. If I were a betting man, the safest bet might be Todd Bowles. The Jets quarterback situation is a disaster, and the team keeps stumbling along. A longer shot worth wagering on would be Chargers coach Mike McCoy. They opened the season 1-4, and have since gone 3-2. They face tough matchups the next four weeks at Houston, vs. Tampa Bay, at Carolina, and vs. Oakland. If they lose four straight heading into Week 16 at Cleveland, maybe McCoy is the first one fired.
