Week 12 is upon us, and that means the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins are squaring off on Sunday. The two teams rarely play given their opposite conferences. They last met in 2012 at Candlestick Park, with the 49ers winning 27-13. Colin Kaepernick made his fourth career start in that game. He completed 18 of 23 passes for 185 yards, and rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown in the win.
The most notable matchup of course was when they squared off in Super Bowl 19. It was a matchup of great offense and great defense, with Joe Montana and Dan Marino squaring off in the latter’s only Super Bowl appearance. We know how that turned out!
The 49ers enter this game stumbling along at 1-9 and competing for one of the top picks in the 2017 NFL Draft. On the other hand, the Miami Dolphins are surging. After a 1-4 start, they have won five straight games, and are right in the thick of the AFC wild card race. They currently sit two games back of the New England Patriots, and one game back of the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos for the two wild card spots. Their win streak opened with home wins over the Steelers, Bills, and Jets, and then continued with road wins over the Chargers and Rams. They beat the Steelers by double digits, but otherwise they have all been single digit wins. Wins are wins, but they have a lot of work in front of them.
