The 49ers and Dolphins kick off in Miami at 10 am PT. Niners Nation is here to break down the fantasy implications of the matchup with sit/start advice, statistical projections from NFL.com, as well as last minute waiver wire targets at each position.
The 49ers defense is abysmal, allowing the 4th most fantasy points to QB’s. Ryan Tannehill hasn’t been a fantasy star this year, but should be a decent option this week. Start Tannehill.
Colin Kaepernick has three straight weeks as a Top 10 fantasy QB. The Dolphins D is stingy, but not impenetrable. He will absolutely finish better than the 31st at his position that he’s projected this week. It’s a riskier call, but start Kaepernick.
Need a QB? With 3 games already in the books for Week 12, it’s tough to find waiver wire options. Tannehill and Kaepernick are likely the two best QB’s available in most leagues. Joe Flacco faces off against a Bengals defense allowing the 6th most points to QB’s. He’s available in 81% of leagues.
Ryan Tannehill: 244 pass yards, 1 TD, 17 rush yards, 1 TD - 23.9 points (2nd among QB’s)
Colin Kaepernick: 204 pass yards, 1 INT, 32 rush yards - 11.4 points (31st QB)
The last time the 49ers didn’t allow a top 10 fantasy performance at RB was Week 3. The run defense is pathetic, allowing the most fantasy points in the entire NFL to RB’s. Start Jay Ajayi.
It might be a lower week for Carlos Hyde’s production, as the Dolphins allow the 7th least points to RB’s, but he’s a lock starter every week that he’s healthy. Start Hyde.
Need a RB? Last week Patriots RB Dion Lewis shook off the rust from missing the first 10 games due to injury, and should be ready for a bigger impact this week. Lewis was a breakout star before injury derailed him in 2015. He is available in 70% of leagues.
Jay Ajayi: 86 rush yards, 1 TD, 15 receiving yards - 14.1 points (11th RB)
Carlos Hyde: 64 rush yards, 1 TD, 12 receiving yards - 12.6 (14th RB)
The 49ers have allowed the 2nd most points in the NFL to WR’s. The Dolphins spread touches between three receivers, however, so it’s tough deciding which one will produce in a given week. Start Kenny Stills. Flip a coin between Jarvis Landry and DeVonte Parker. Or start them all. The 49ers are that bad.
The Dolphins are a middle of the pack unit against WR’s, but it’s hard to trust any 49ers player at that position. Sit Kerley, Patton, and Smith.
Need a WR? Despite being the 19th highest scoring player at WR, Rishard Mathews is a Free Agent in 53% of fantasy leagues. Snatch him up and start him against a very bad Bears defense. Tyrell Williams is in a similar boat, available in 51% of leagues despite being 18th at WR, but he faces a much tougher matchup in the Texans.
Jarvis Landry: 68 yards - 6.8 points (39th WR)
DeVonte Parker: 55 yards - 5.5 points (51st WR)
Jeremy Kerley: 44 yards - 4.4 points (67th WR)
Quinton Patton: 37 yards - 3.7 points (81st WR)
Kenny Stills: 37 yards - 3.7 points (83rd WR)
Torrey Smith: 26 yards - 2.6 points (93rd WR)
The Dolphins TE’s are terrible. They don’t have a single player in the Top 50 in fantasy points at that position. Dion Sims is projected as the 13th best player at the position this week, but don’t buy it. Sit Sims.
Vance McDonald has been an enigma this season, occasionally breaking out with a viable fantasy performance before disappearing for weeks. He’s scored a TD in two of the last 3 games, however. He’s a risky proposition, but McDonald is a weak start.
Need a TE? No team has allowed more points to TE’s than the Browns, making Giants starter Will Tye worth a dice roll at a very thin position. Other under-performers like Clive Walford and Jermaine Gresham have favorable matchups as well.
Dion Sims: 19 yards, 1 TD - 7.9 points (13th TE)
Vance McDonald: 33 yards - 3.3 points (30th TE)
Neither Kicker is a great option. The 49er allow a good number of points at kicker, but Andrew Franks has not produced a lot of points this season. The Dolphins are a tough matchup, and Phil Dawson hasn’t been a great fantasy option overall. Sit both Dawson and Franks.
Need a K? Fantasy owners almost always neglect kickers, meaning that the No. 1 player at the position, Matt Bryant, is available in over half of fantasy leagues. If Bryant isn’t available, Dan Carpenter has the most favorable matchup for kickers and is available in 93% of leagues.
Andrew Franks: 12 points (4th K)
Phil Dawson: 7 points (17th K)
The Dolphins have the 4th best defensive unit in fantasy football, and the 49ers offense isn’t good. Start the Dolphins DEF.
The 49ers defense is never a good fantasy option. Ever. Don’t even consider them an option from here on out. Sit the 49ers DEF.
Need a DEF? The Dolphins DEF is a premium unit with a favorable matchup, available to 78% of fantasy owners.
Dolphins DEF: 8 points (6th DEF)
49ers DEF: 4 points (19th DEF)
