NFL 2017 free agency: Breaking down the Jacksonville Jaguars cap space and potential free agents

I will be doing a series of articles that will be taking a methodical team by team approach to next year’s possible free agents. I will be starting with the team that has the least amount of salary cap space and ending with the team with the most. I will try to give a brief description of as many of the possible free agents as I can. I will also be looking for players that might be salary cap cuts in order for their teams to make room to sign some of these possible free agents. Any information anyone else can contribute on these players would be very much appreciated.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are projected to be $24,267,399 UNDER the cap (all salary info via Over The Cap) for 2017 and have 49 players under contract.

(EastBayNinerFan has combined the cap space carry over for 2016 with the cap space for 2017 and come up with $64,774,181 total estimated cap space.)

Dollar figures listed are player’s 2016 cap hit.

CB Prince Amukamara - $5,593,750

Prince Amukamara is 27 years old and was originally drafted by the Giants in the first round of the 2011 draft. Amukamara signed a one year deal with the Jaguars after spending his first five years with the Giants. He only has 36 tackles and 3 passes defended this season with 595 snaps. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the 35th best cornerback in the NFL this year.

LG Luke Joekel - $6,745,963

Luke Joekel is 25 years old and was drafted by the Jaguars in the first round of the 2013 draft. Joekel has been a bust so far in his career and was moved from left tackle to left guard this summer. He is on injured reserve after tearing both his MCL and ACL in October.

43DE Tyson Alualu - $3,000,000

Tyson Alualu is 29 years old and was drafted by the Jaguars in the first round of the 2011 draft. Alualu has 27 tackles and 2.5 sacks so far this season. He is not a fit for our system and we already have at least three better defensive ends.

43DT Abry Jones - $2,553,000

Abry Jones is 25 years old and was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Jaguars in 2013. Jones is a fairly decent 43 DT but, someone please correct me if I am wrong, I don’t think he would be that great of a nose tackle in a 34 system. He has 22 tackles so far this season but has a pretty decent rating Pro Football Focus.

S Jonathan Cyprien - $1,740,170

Jonathan Cyprien is 26 years old and was drafted by the Jaguars in the second round of the 2013 draft. Cyprien is arguably the best safety against the run in the NFL. His 84 tackles, one sack and only one pass defended this season with no interceptions pretty much tells you everything you need to know about him. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the eighth best safety in the NFL this season. I think the Jags extend him.

WR Bryan Walters - $494,118

Bryan Walters is 29 years old and was originally picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Chargers in 2010. Walters has five receptions for 45 yards this season.

43DT Jordan Hill - $238,235

Jordan Hill is 25 years old and was originally drafted by the Seahawks in the third round of the 2013 draft. He has not been very productive as a 43 DT but I wonder how he would do as a nose tackle in a 34? It probably would not cost much to get him onto our 90 man roster in 2017.

LG Patrick Omameh - $675,000

Patrick Omameh is 26 years old and was originally picked up as an undrafted free agent by the 49ers in 2013. Did we miss the boat with Omameh? He was rated as the 29th best guard in the NFL by PFF this season before being placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. He still is not great at run blocking.

RB Denard Robinson - $728,403

Denard Robinson is 26 years old and was drafted by the Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2013 draft. Robinson has 37 carries for 127 yards this season. His most productive season was 2004 with 135 carries for 582 yards. He might be worth taking a look at if the Jags don’t sign him.
