49ers-Jets final score: Embarrassing overtime loss is the Week 14 cherry on top

We break down another embarrassing loss.

The San Francisco 49ers Week 14 to the New York Jets felt like their season in a nutshell. They got out to a lead and looked solid, only to collapse in the second half and eventually lose. Yes, the the San Francisco 49ers extended their franchise-record losing streak to 12 games as they lost to the Jets by a final score of 23-17. The 49ers drop to 1-12 with the loss, while the Jets improve to 4-9.

The close to this game was thoroughly embarrassing. The 49ers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, and Carlos Hyde had a monster day. He rushed for 193 yards, and added a seven-yard receiving touchdown. He was having his way with the Jets, and somehow the 49ers managed to blow the huge effort.

The 49ers took a 17-3 lead in the second quarter, but they then managed to give up 17 unanswered points to the Jets. After starting 7/7 for 95 yards and a touchdown, Colin Kaepernick went 8 of 19 for 38 yards the rest of the way. Jets running back Bilal Powell came on in place of Matt Forte after the latter suffered a first quarter injury, and as one would expect, he had his way with the 49ers run defense. Powell had the second 100-yard rushing game of his career. The only other time he surpassed 100 yards was a 149-yard effort in 2013.

It was an embarrassing second half effort as the 49ers have all but locked up the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. They remain a game back of Cleveland and a game ahead of Jacksonville. They have the SOS edge of the Jaguars, but I don’t think we will be seeing another 49ers win this year. Here comes 1-15.

Up next: at Atlanta Falcons (8-5)

The 49ers head on the road to Atlanta in Week 15. Atlanta opened the season 4-1, but has struggled since, alternating wins and losses and now sitting at 8-5. They went on the road and thumped the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14. They’ll get to face the 49ers in the friendly confines of the Georgia Dome. It is going to be a brutal test of the 49ers defense, both against the pass and the run. Julio Jones sat out the Falcons Week 14 win due to turf toe. Turf toe is a tough injury, so his status is likely in question for Week 15.
