The San Francisco 49ers lost their 12th straight game on Sunday, extending their franchise record with a 23-17 loss to the New York Jets. The 49ers were a rare favorite in the game, laying a field goal against a Jets team that had given up on Monday Night Football against the Indianapolis Colts. The 49ers took a 17-3 lead into the half, but the second half was once again a problem for the team. The offense went into a shell, and the defense could not stop Bryce Petty and Bilal Powell from putting up 20 unanswered points.
Everybody knows the 49ers are a really bad football team, but seeing them blow that lead to the Jets was just another excruciating piece of insight. The team dealt with numerous injuries, but the lack of depth after the injuries might be the final nail in the coffin for Trent Baalke.
As for Chip Kelly? Jay Glazer previously reported Kelly was safe heading into 2017, but Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday that anything is possible with Kelly because the team might go outside the organization for a new general manager. A new GM, be it Mike Shanahan or anybody else, would likely want to bring in their own coach.
And so, the organization is at a crossroads. Do the Yorks fire Baalke, fire Kelly, completely turn everything over, and hand it over to someone to handle entirely? Do they fire one but not the other and half-heartedly move forward in hopes that one change will be enough? Or do they just stick their head in the sand and hope things get better as is? I just cannot see any way option three happens at this point. The team is very likely to go 1-15 and I have to think somebody gets fired after this season. Who that is and how they are replaced remains a mystery.
