The San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons wrapped up their Wednesday practice sessions, and we have the first participation report. The 49ers look to once again be short-handed on offense, with wide receiver Torrey Smith and left tackle Joe Staley listed as DNPs.
Smith suffered a concussion on Sunday, and it looked pretty bad when he went down. He was able to eventually get up, but was carted to the locker room and quickly ruled out. He has to go through the concussion protocol to get back on the field. That requires he be asymptomatic through the week and work his way back to football activities.
If Smith is unable to play on Sunday, Quinton Patton and Jeremy Kerley would start against the Falcons. Chris Harper has emerged as the next option, and would likely be the first guy off the bench, ahead of Rod Streater and Aaron Burbridge.
Staley missed last week’s game with a hamstring injury he suffered during practice. The absence snapped a streak of 92 consecutive games played. Zane Beadles started in his place. Marcus Martin initially replaced Beadles at left guard, but when Daniel Kilgore suffered what would prove to be a season-ending hamstring injury, Martin moved to center and Andrew Tiller moved in at left guard.
