We are going to hear all kinds of reports between now and April that suggest player X, Y, or Z is going to any given team. Some is BS, some is truth, and some is somewhere in between. And even if a given report is true, it does not mean that the story will be exactly what we expect.
I might need to include that at the top of most draft reports, but there was an interesting one last weekend. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Cleveland Browns had an “astronomical grade” on Texas A&M pass rusher Myles Garrett. This would not exactly be a shocking revelation considering a lot of people view him as the best player in the draft.
The report had an interesting comment that I overlooked when I first wrote about it. Schefter had this to say:
Taking Garrett could upgrade Cleveland's defense, but it would also likely deny the Browns the chance to take the top-rated quarterback in the draft. Cleveland, however, is still doing its due diligence in scouting quarterbacks. Browns scout Lake Dawson, who once starred at Notre Dame, has spent an inordinate amount of time in South Bend, Indiana, scouting Fighting Irish quarterback DeShone Kizer, according to a school source. Many expect Kizer, a junior, to announce that he will turn pro as soon as this week.
I’d like to think the Browns would consider taking a quarterback No. 1, but Cleveland is in a pretty great position to not have to do that. They have their No. 1 pick, but also have the Philadelphia Eagles first round pick through the Carson Wentz trade. Right now, the Eagles (5-8) are tied with three other teams for spots 7-10 in the draft order. Plenty can change in that, but the Eagles remaining schedule sets up a 6-10 or 5-11 finish. They travel to the Ravens this weekend, and then host the Giants and Cowboys to close out the season. Odds are strong the Browns get a top ten pick out of this.
All that being said, we’ll continue to keep an eye on the Browns potential draft plans. The higher that Eagles pick is, the harder it will be to figure out exactly what is going on, but odds seem pretty good right now Garrett will end up that top pick.
