2017 NFL free agency: Breaking down the New York Giants cap space, potential free agents

The San Francisco 49ers will have a ton of cap space. We’re going to take a look at the potential free agents for the 31 other teams around the NFL.

I will be doing a series of articles that will be taking a methodical team by team approach to next year’s possible free agents. I will be starting with the team that has the least amount of salary cap space and ending with the team with the most. I will try to give a brief description of as many of the possible free agents as I can. I will also be looking for players that might be salary cap cuts in order for their teams to make room to sign some of these possible free agents. Any information anyone else can contribute on these players would be very much appreciated.

The New York Giants are projected to be $28,519,686 UNDER the cap (all salary info via Over The Cap) for 2017 and with only 38 players under contract.

(EastBayNinerFan has the combined total of the salary cap surplus carry over from 2016 and the cap space for 2017 as $32,116,156)

Can I have Nassib please?

Dollar figures listed are player’s 2016 cap hit.

43DE Jason Pierre Paul - $9,400,000

Jason Pierre Paul is 27 years old and was drafted by the Giants in the first round of the 2010 draft. Jason turned down more money with the Cardinals earlier this year to sign a one year deal with the Giants. He is out for the season after getting surgery for a sports hernia on December 7. Prior to the injury, JPP had 53 tackles, seven sacks, eight passes defended and three forced fumbles this year. He remains a premier player in the NFL.

43OLB Keenan Robinson - $2,534,275

Keenan Robinson is 27 years old and was originally drafted by Washington in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. The Giants signed him in March of this year. Robinson has 72 tackles and seven passes defended this season. He has not graded out well against the run.

TE Larry Donnell - $1,671,000

Larry Donnell is 28 years old and was originally picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Giants in 2012. Donnell has 15 receptions for 92 yards this season and had 29 receptions for 223 yards in 2015.

RG Ron Jerry - $1,900,000

Ron Jerry is 30 years old and was originally drafted by the Dolphins in the third round of the 2010 draft. Jerry signed with the Giants in March of 2014 after being accused of being one of the bullies in the Dolphin’s bullying fiasco. Pro Football Focus has Jerry rated as the 32nd best guard in the league so far this season.

RT Marshall Newhouse - $1,950,000

Marshall Newhouse is 28 year old and was originally drafted by the Packers in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. Newhouse has been with the Giants since March of 2015. He seems like he would be an above average backup tackle.

CB Leon Hall - $,437,5100

Leon Hall is 32 years old and was originally drafted by the Bengals in the first round of the 2007 draft. Hall was signed by the Giants in August of this year after spending the rest of his career with the Bengals. Hall has 28 tackles, two passes defended, one interception, and one sack this year.

43OLB Mark Herzlich - $1,400,000

Mark Herzlich is 29 years old and was picked up by the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2011. Mark has six tackles so far this year. He is way down from the 52 he had in 2014.

LT William Beatty - $1,100,000

William Beatty is 31 years old and was drafted by the Giants in the second round of the 2009 draft. Beatty has been active for six games this year, but only has five offensive snaps so far.

43 DT Jonathan Hankins - $1,282,494

Jonathan Hankins is 24 years old and was drafted by the Giants in the second round of the 2013 draft. Hankins has 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble this season. He had 51 tackles and seven sacks in 2014. At 6’2” and 320 pounds, I wonder how well he would do at nose tackle?

CB Coty Sensabaugh - $705,882

Coty Sensabaugh is 28 years old and was originally drafted by the Titans in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. The Rams signed Sensabaugh to a three-year $15 million contract in March of this year, and cut him in October, at which point he was signed by the Giants. He has 19 tackles this season after having 60 tackles and two interceptions with the Titans last year.

K Robbie Gould - $637,353

Robbie Gould is 34 years old and was originally picked up by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He spent 11 great years with the Bears and I can’t believe they released him earlier this year.

QB Josh Johnson - $600,000

Josh Johnson is 30 years old and was originally drafted by the Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2008 draft. Anyone ready for a third Josh Johnson stint with 49er? I think he would be an upgrade from the quarterbacks we have now.

RB Bobby Rainey - $680,000

Bobby Rainey is 29 years old and was originally picked up by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Rainey has 17 carries for 63 yards this year. His best all around year was with the Bucs in 2014 when he had 406 yards rushing with a 4.3 yards per carry average and 33 receptions for 315 yards.

ILB Kelvin Sheppard - $680,000

Kelvin Sheppard is 28 years old and was originally drafted by the Bills in the third round of the 2011 draft. Sheppard has 44 tackles and two passes defended this season. He had 105 tackles and two passes defended while he was with the Dolphins in 2015. PFF has him rated near the bottom of the league (83rd). Way down there with Michael Wilhoite.

I mainly try to add the players PFF position as a way to see how that player averages out with the other players in the league. If the player is in the top third, there is probably something to it. If they are in the bottom third, there is probably something to that as well. I don’t really care if they are 12th instead of 7th. Like Chip was saying yesterday, they aren’t that accurate, but they are another tool that helps us see the overall picture. I often can’t find much information on a player and PFF is all of the information I have available. It is better than nothing.

QB Ryan Nassib - $788,400

Nassib is 26 years old and was drafted by the Giants in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. Nassib is 6’2” and weighs 223 pounds. He has spent his professional career backing up Eli Manning and has never started a game in the NFL. Nassib had a 62.4 completion percentage each of his final two seasons atSyracuse, and a quarterback rating of 143.3 his senior year. I would personally prefer Nassib over any quarterback in the 2017 draft.
