49ers bring DiAndre Campbell back to practice squad, according to Curtis Modkins

The 49ers brought back a former member of the practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers are promoting DeAndre Smelter from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, leaving a practice squad spot open. It sounds like they have a player in mind for that as well. During his weekly press conference, offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said DiAndre Campbell has re-joined the team at practice.

The news slipped out because of the similarity in the names DiAndre and DeAndre. A media member asked about Smelter and what he has done, referencing him as DeAndre. Modkins said he was not sure because he has just arrived. A follow-up question about Smelter had Modkins telling the previous questioner, oh you mean Smelter, not Campbell.

The 49ers signed Campbell as an undrafted free agent out of Washington back in 2015. He spent the season on the practice squad and was signed to a reserve/future deal after the season. He was part of the first round of roster cuts in August and has been a free agent since.
