2017 NFL free agency: Breaking down the Oakland Raiders cap space, potential free agents

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers will have a ton of cap space. We’re going to take a look at the potential free agents for the 31 other teams around the NFL.

I will be doing a series of articles that will be taking a methodical team by team approach to next year’s possible free agents. I will be starting with the team that has the least amount of salary cap space and ending with the team with the most. I will try to give a brief description of as many of the possible free agents as I can. I will also be looking for players that might be salary cap cuts in order for their teams to make room to sign some of these possible free agents. Any information anyone else can contribute on these players would be very much appreciated.

The Oakland Raiders projected to be $41,285,487 UNDER the cap (all salary info via Over The Cap) for 2017 and with 42 players under contract.

(EastBayNinerFan has the combined total of the salary cap surplus carry over from 2016 and the cap space for 2017 as $50,774,712). That might seem like a lot of money but Khalil Mack and Derek Carr will be in the last year of their contracts in 2017 and need to be extended. Cooper will need to be extended the following year and don’t forget they still need to extend Latavius Murray before free agency begins in 2017.

Dollar figures listed are player’s 2016 cap hits.

43OLB Malcolm Smith - $3,000,000

Malcolm Smith is 27 years old and was originally drafted by the Seahawks in the seventh round of the 2011 draft. Smith signed with the Raiders in March of 2015. He has 91 tackles, two forced fumbles, one interception and three passes defended this season. PFF has him rated as the 76th best linebacker in the NFL this season. His best year was in 2013 with the Seahawks when he was the Super Bowl MVP.

S Nate Allen - $3,000,000

Nate Allen is 29 years old and was originally drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2010 draft. Allen was signed by the Raiders in March of 2015. He has started only three games this year and has 32 tackles, three passes defended, and two interceptions.

CB DJ Hayden - $3,284,813

DJ Hayden is 26 years old and was drafted by the Raiders in the first round of the 2013 draft. Hayden has started only two games this season and has 37 tackles, six passes defended, and I forced fumble. PFF had him as the 104th best CB in the NFL before he was placed on IR after week 12 with a hamstring injury. Do we officially have a first round bust here?

QB Matthew McGloin - $2,553,000

Matthew McGloin is 27 years old and was picked up by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2013. McGloin has not started a game since 2013 when he had a 55.9 completion percentage and a quarterback rating of 76.1. McGloin is expected to start this week against the Broncos after Carr broke his leg in last week’s game. It will be fun to see what Musgrave has done with him.

WR Andre Holmes - $2,000,000

Andre Holmes is 28 years old and was originally picked up by the Viking as an undrafted free agent in 2011. The Raider claimed Holmes off of waiver in May of 2013 and he was suspended for substance abuse for four games in July of the same year. Holmes has 14 receptions for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns this season.

RT Menelik Watson - $1,525,635

Menelik Watson is 28 years old and was drafted by the Raiders in the second round of the 2013 draft. Watson has started four games this season. His overall PFF rating is 69.1, which is not great but not awful either.

ILB Perry Riley - $899,990

Perry Riley is 30 years old and was originally drafted by Washington in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. Riley was signed by the Raiders in October of this year. He has 44 tackles, two forced fumbles, and one pass defended this season. PFF has him rated as the 11th best linebacker in the NFL this season. That sounds like a nice, midseason pickup.

43OLB Daren Bates - $850,000

Daren Bates is 26 years old and was originally picked up by the Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Bates was signed by the Raider in March of this year. He has 12 tackles in limited action. Bates sounds like a good name for a motel.

S Brynden Trawick - $825,000

Brynden Trawick is 27 years old and was originally picked up by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Trawick signed with the Raiders in March of this year. He has 14 tackles in limited action. He had 15 tackles with the Ravens last season.

RB Latavius Murray - $701,550

Latavius Murray is 26 years old and was drafted by the Raiders in the sixth round of the 2013 draft. Murray has 190 carries for 777 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. He had 266 carries for 1,066 yards in 2015. I think the Raiders will be extending him.

TE Mychal Rivera - $1,697,213

Mychal Rivera is 26 years old and was drafted by the Raiders in the sixth round of the 2013 draft. Rivera has 16 receptions for 183 yards this season. His has only started one game since 2014 when he had 58 receptions for 534 yards in 10 starts. Does anyone know his drop rate?

43DT Stacy McGee - $695,670

Stacy McGee is 26 years old and was picked by the Raiders in the sixth round of the 2013 draft. How many sixth round picks did the Raiders have in 2013? McGee has 17 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles this season. He is 6’3” and weighs 310 pounds. With a 79.9 PFF rating he may be a player to take a closer look at. You can check out his interpretation of Newton’s Laws of Motion in the main picture.
