Golden Nuggets: The final game

Your San Francisco 49ers links for Saturday, December 31st 2016

Doesn’t it feel like we got swindled out of some days off? Christmas is on a Sunday, New Years is on a Sunday. We lost our holidays, dammit. Well for those of you lucky few that get holidays off we lost some holidays. But regardless, we have a game on Sunday. The final game of the 2016 season.

This may be the last game for Colin Kaepernick, or Chip Kelly, or Trent Baalke or all three. I’d put my money on Trent Baalke being let go and so do several reports coming out. The buck stops with the general manager. The current San Francisco 49ers roster is in shambles partly because of some terrible drafts. The 2016 draft has been just OK, but it doesn’t erase some of the terrible picks the 49ers have pulled the trigger on. Tank Carridine, A.J. Jenkins, LaMichael James, Will Redmond. I don’t expect every player to work out, I can even let the 2012 draft slide, but the 49ers roster is horrible right now.

As far as coaching, it will be interesting to see where this all ends up. If all goes as according to reports, the 49ers are going to be looking for a GM. It will be interesting if they buck the trend and start blowing everything up in the scouting department, pass over Tom Gamble and go get someone else (who knows if Gamble even wants the job), because then the whole Chip Kelly job security thing comes into play.

The more I think about it, the more exciting the potential offseason is going to be instead of the actual season we had to navigate to. Last year, I gave all of you the great Coach Watch. If Baalke is fired, expect me to hit all of you with its sequel: GM Watch.

Happy New Year, everyone. Let’s hope the 49ers’ resolution is to stop being terrible.
