Chip Kelly and the San Francisco 49ers continue working to fill out the coaching staff. ESPN's Adam Caplan is reporting Kelly has hired former Eagles assistant Keanon Lowe as an offensive analyst. FOX Sports NFL reporter Alex Marvez is reporting Kelly hired former Eagles assistant linebackers coach Brian Smith as a defensive assistant.
Lowe served in an analyst role for the Eagles from July 2015 to January 2016. prior to that he played football at oregon from 2010 to 2015. He played wide receiver at Oregon, and secured a May 2015 tryout at the Arizona Cardinals rookie minicamp. After that did not work out, he joined Kelly's coaching staff in July. He said his analyst role at the time was similar to a graduate assistant in college coaching. Here's a look at his developing interest in coaching.
Prior to joining the Eagles in 2015, Smith spent eight years as an assistant with the New York Jets. He started as the team's offensive quality control coach, and worked his way up to assistant defensive backs coach in 2013 and 2014. He played in the secondary at the university of Massachusetts, and got his coaching career started as outside linebackers coach in 2004. He coached wide receivers in 2005, and got to work with then college receiver Victor Cruz.
