The quarterback situation with the 49ers is a major discussion for the team this offseason. The team currently has 3 quarterbacks under contract for 2016: Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, and Dylan Thompson. Colin will be a major decision for the team. On April 1st, if Colin is still on the team, his $11.9 million salary will be fully guaranteed. It figures that Chip Kelly would be the one to make this decision. Management hired Chip to reinvent their lackluster offense and if Chip thinks Colin would be the perfect candidate for that offense, then Colin will probably stay.
Blaine Gabbert showed he had improved from his days as the quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He showed the ability to be accurate and athletic. He had a completion percentage of 63% while Colin only mustered a 59%. Chip might see that Blaine is a cheaper alternative to Colin while being able to operate the offense. Blaine could be a stopgap solution and allow the 49ers to select a quarterback in the draft to develop as the franchise quarterback of the future.
There are 3 names circulating as the top tier of draft QBs. Carson Wentz of North Dakota State, Jared Goff of Cal, and Paxton Lynch of Memphis. Based on their draft position, it looks likely that the 49ers will have the chance to take one of these players. Will Trent and Chip think highly of any of those players to select them at #7 or will they fill another need? They have needs at most positions so it may make more sense to take the top talent on their draft board.
