Good morning! Things seem to have settled down a bit for free agency, well for everyone else. With the San Francisco 49ers, things seem to have been a bit of the same (nothing has happened), that is, until the evening came around. The Colin Kaepernick drama seems to have progressed, though how much 'progression' is up for debate since it seems like only minor details instead of progress have come out.
There is one nice thing that happened, and that's Phil Dawson is returning in 2016. The 49ers kicker signed a 1 year contract with just over $3 million fully guaranteed, and it's a good signing. I'm all for the 49ers looking to draft a young kicker ( and I hope they are if they scouted one with promise, Dawson's 41) but if their guy is gone, they have Dawson there for one more year. Better to plan ahead than to have someone targeted in the draft get snatched up and then you're scrambling. Now if that is the plan, then it may be a waste of $3 million. My response: What else are they doing with that salary cap space (answer: nothing)?
We can criticize Baalke and the organization for many things over the last few days, signing Dawson isn't one of them.
