One of the more intriguing free agents on the open market is outside linebacker Aldon Smith. Following his release by the San Francisco 49ers, he signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders. He played nine games before being suspended in mid-November for a full year due to violations of the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Smith is an unrestricted free agent, and according to Paul Gutierrez, he can sign somewhere at any point before his suspension ends.

My guess is Smith ends up re-signing with the Oakland Raiders. They gave him a chance after the 49ers released him, and I suspect he returns to Oakland. It remains to be seen how his career is going to play out. He is an immensely talented pass rusher, but he has plenty of issues to deal with if he wants to develop any sort of long-term NFL career.
