The San Francisco 49ers have an unresolved situation with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but we might get at least a slightly better handle on the situation shortly. Head coach Chip Kelly was at the San Jose State Pro Day, and he had a chance to chat with Matt Barrows about the status of Kaepernick. There was no great revelations, but some good info to add to what we already know.
According to Barrows, Kaepernick will be in town on Friday for a physical. Reports have been positive as Kaepernick continues his rehab up in Vail, Colorado. However, the team's doctors will want to get a better handle on things as the team works on trade negotiations, and the April 1 full salary guarantee approaches.
There will likely be at least one more physical involved if a trade gets done, and of course if the team decides to release him, a physical would be part of any potential injury settlement. At the same time, Chip Kelly is prepared to work with Kaepernick when the offseason workout program begins. He told Barrows that "[i]f [Kaepernick]'s here on April 4 we're going to coach the heck out of him and he's going to work his ass off."
Kelly and Baalke both seemed to think Kaepernick would be around when April gets here, but they also had to cover their butts for trade purposes. The bigger question right now would seem to be whether or not Kaepernick is on the roster when training camp gets here, or when Week 1 of the 2016 season rolls around. It's hard to say anything for certain at this point. I remain convinced he'll be gone before the season starts, but crazier things have happened.
