Golden Nuggets: Franchise Tags Given

For the 4th consecutive season, the 49ers did not use their franchise tag on any of their players. The deadline to use the tag was Tuesday afternoon. The last time the team used the tag was in 2012 on safety Dashon Goldson. The team decided the prices associated with the tag were too high for their free agents that include: Ian Williams, Alex Boone, Anquan Boldin and Phil Dawson.

Ian Williams will likely be the top priority for the 49ers to resign followed by Phil Dawson. The 49ers need all the help they can get on the defensive line and Ian performed very well last season. Phil Dawson was nearly flawless from the new 33 yard extra point by making 20 out of 21. He was 24 out of 27 on field goals last season with 2 of those misses coming from 40+ yards. Anquan is on the wrong side of 30 and the team could be looking to rebuild their WR corps. Alex Boone had issues with the team the last 2 seasons and it's likely that the 2 sides will part ways this offseason.

A couple of players that were franchise tagged that were possible targets for the 49ers were the Bears WR Alshon Jeffrey, Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson, and Rams CB Trumaine Johnson. The 49ers are able to try to sign them, but would have to give up 2 1st round draft picks. Trent Baalke likes his draft picks, so it would be shocking for him to do this.
