The NFL's running back market has cleared up fairly quickly over the first two weeks of free agency. The big names went early, and smaller names are coming off the board over the last week. The latest is Alfred Morris. The former Washington running back has agreed to a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys, according to his agent. This follows Dallas re-signing Lance Dunbar.
The 49ers brought Dunbar in for a visit, but ended up not getting anything done. The 49ers running back depth chart currently includes Carlos Hyde, Mike Davis, Shaun Draughn, DuJuan Harris, Jarryd Hayne, and Kendall Gaskins. I imagine the 49ers add at least one more body to the mix, but is it possible it is no more than a UDFA?
This past year showed that the team does not need to invest heavily in the position. There are areas where the 49ers desperately need serious depth. I do think a little more depth could help at running back, but spending on a big name or investing a notable draft pick in this particular position might just be flushing an asset down the toilet.
