Trent Baalke, 49ers work out Kevin Dodd along with Shaq Lawson

The San Francisco 49ers took a look at two key members of the Clemson defense on Thursday. Here's the latest on Trent Baalke's visit.

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke was at Clemson on Thursday working out defensive end Shaq Lawson, but it wasn't just a one-on-one show. According to Matt Barrows, the 49ers also worked out defensive end Kevin Dodd, and will bring him in for a Santa Clara visit along with Lawson.

Lawson is viewed as a first round pick, while Dodd seems to be somewhere between the first and second. At the NFL Combine, Lawson weighed in at 269 pounds, while Dodd weighed in at 277 pounds. It's only eight pounds, but while Lawson would likely cut weight to be an outside linebacker, Dodd might need to bulk up a bit. I don't know that they would want him playing 3-4 defensive end, but the initial plan could be to use him as an edge rusher in the nickel defense. Read more about Dodd in LI49er's scouting report, and more about Lawson in LI49er's other scouting report.

The 49ers have been primarily mocked to the likes of Myles Jack, DeForest Buckner, Carson Wentz, and Jared Goff. Lawson is the more likely candidate for the No. 7 pick, but even then, it's possible the team would prefer to move back a bit. Of course, back in 2011, the 49ers surprised most people by selecting Aldon Smith with the No. 7 pick that year. Maybe they surprise us again in 2016.
