Running backs fairly settled in Mike Mayock position rankings 2.0

The San Francisco 49ers have several options at running back. Could they add a little more depth in April?

The 2016 NFL Draft process rolls along this month with players conducting workouts at school Pro Days. That will be followed by private workouts, which just about marks the end of the pre-draft process. With that in mind, we're back for another round of Mike Mayock position rankings. We went through them in February leading up to the NFL Combine.

Mayock posted his latest positional rankings back on March 8. Free agency got in the way, but with that slowed down, I thought I'd go back through each of his positions over the next week and a half. I suspect Mayock will be back with more rankings sometime in early April after Pro Days wrap up. We started with edge rushers, and moved on to defensive tacklesinside linebackers, and then interior offensive linemen. Today, we look at running backs.

The running back position is not exactly a pressing need early in the draft for the San Francisco 49ers, but I suspect the team adds one more to the mix. Carlos Hyde is the lead guy, with Mike Davis, Shaun Draughn, DuJuan Harris, Jarryd Hayne, and Kendall Gaskins all in the mix for work as well. I could see the team looking for some more help in the passing game. They have some possibilities, with DuJuan Harris and Jarryd Hayne two intriguing options.

Trent Baalke told Matt Maiocco that the team feels comfortable with the current group, and could go into the season with them. I wouldn't expect him to say the group sucks, so take it for what you will. But I still think the team invests at least a little bit in the position.

I don't think the 49ers invest a high pick in the draft, so these rankings only hold so much value. And last year showed us that under-the-radar options can pan out really well. The 49ers running back corps was decimated by injuries, but guys like Shaun Draughn and DuJuan Harris proved to be capable replacements. Maybe the 49ers stick to a strategy of low spending at the position moving forward.
