49ers free agent Anquan Boldin visits Washington Tuesday

Boldin is taking his first official visit of free agency, though he has said he wants to return to the 49ers or play for a contender.

Free agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin has his first official visit of free agency, as he will take a visit with Washington, according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post. To this point, Boldin has been taking a slower approach to free agency and the only other reported interest was from the New England Patriots, though no official visit took place.

Washington has been looking for wide receiver options for several years now. Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan were marquee signings at one point and while the latter didn't work out, the former finished last season with 72 receptions for 777 yards and six touchdowns. He was second on the team, behind tight end Jordan Reed, who had 952 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Kirk Cousins surprised everyone by being surprisingly competent and effective last season, certainly more effective than any quarterback on the San Francisco 49ers roster. Boldin joined the 49ers in 2013 and has been excellent for the team ever since. He went over 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons with the team but with a couple injuries and very poor quarterback play last season, he only reached 789 yards and four touchdowns.

Still, Boldin is an effective receiver who hasn't slowed down nearly as much as some like to claim. He's a veteran and will certainly sign with someone for 2016. The 49ers want him back and Boldin has claimed he wants to return to the 49ers, but San Francisco has made it clear that if they re-sign him, they don't plan on sealing the deal until later in the process, possibly after the 2016 NFL Draft.
