Chip Kelly adds Tem Lukabu, Vince Oghobaase to 49ers coaching staff

The San Francisco 49ers have added two defensive coaches to the coaching staff. One was a few weeks back, and one is a new report. Here's what the defensive coaching staff looks like.

The San Francisco 49ers added a new coach last month that we missed, and are reportedly adding another coach. The 49ers have hired Texas State defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase as an assistant defensive line coach, and are set to add Western Michigan linebackers coach Tem Lukabu in an as yet undetermined role. The Oghobaase news was confirmed by Texas State, and he's even on Twitter. The Lukabu news comes via a report from SI writer Thayer Evans.

Lukabu just joined the Western Michigan staff this past January, so this is a quick change for him. Prior to working at WMU, here is what Lukabu's resume looks like:

2015: Linebackers - Florida International
2014: Outside linebackers - Colgate
2012-2013: Defensive assistant - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2012: Defensive coordinator, linebackers - Fordham (2 months)
2010-2011: Outside linebackers - Rutgers
2008-2009: Linebackers - Rhode Island
2006-2007: Player development, grad assistant - Rutgers

This marks the second time he has jumped to the NFL shortly after being hired for a college job. He was going to be the Fordham defensive coordinator, but he was offered a job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was part of Greg Schiano's staff at Rutgers, so it is not surprising he eventually got an opportunity with Schiano in Tampa.

Oghobaase also joins the 49ers coming off a brief stint in a new job. After finishing his college career at Duke, Oghobaase briefly played for the Hartford Colonials of the UFL. He then joined Washington's practice squad. In 2011, he returned to Duke as a football relations staff assistant in 2011, and then worked with the defensive line in 2012. He moved on to Ohio State, where he served on the coaching staff for two years as a grad assistant.

Oghobaase then left for a job at James Madison in late 2015, but shortly after, followed head coach Everett Withers to Texas State in early 2016. However, he obviously found a better offer from Chip Kelly and the 49ers.

That's quite the coaching whirlwind for both Oghobaase and Lukabu. Here is what the 49ers defensive coaching staff now looks like:

Defensive Coordinator: Jim O'Neil
Defensive Line: Jerry Azzinaro
Assistant Defensive Line: Vince Oghobaase
Inside Linebackers: Hardy Nickerson
Linebackers assistant?: Tem Lukabu
Outside Linebackers: Jason Tarver
Defensive Backs: Jeff Hafley
Assistant Defensive Backs: Roy Anderson
