We're once again in that weird in between phase of the NFL in between the Combine and the Draft when NFL rosters are pretty much in flux and it's quite difficult to assess who teams will be targeting. Most attention is placed on draft prospects because they are the most difficult to project on how and where they will fit in the NFL. Free agents, especially veterans with starting experience, are easier to evaluate but it is still tricky due to the salary cap.
Fortunately the 49ers this year have tons of cap space and draft picks which is why there is a good amount of optimism, in spite of the currently talent-challenged roster and the lowered assessment of Trent Baalke's GM skills. Baalke is completely in the hot seat and most of the pressure is on him to provide new head coach Chip Kelly something to work with (which he obviously failed to do for Jim Tomsula). Seems like Trent is more of a contact hitter type when it comes to GM moves, but if he doesn't hit a home run this year, his job security may finally be on the line.
