Free agency officially starts today! Teams are allowed to sign players that they verbally committed with during the tampering period. The 49ers have been rumored to be interested in a few players, but they have not agreed to terms with any. They did extend deals with a few of their current players. They tendered 1 year deals with LB Michael Wilhoite and G Jordan Devey. They also resigned LB Ray-Ray Armstrong to a 1 year contract extension after he played 5 games last season.
A couple of free agents that the 49ers were reportedly interested in are off the board, according to reports. G Kelechi Osemele of the Ravens agreed to join the Oakland Raiders. Osemele could have helped the offensive line, but the asking price may have been too rich for the team. The Raiders also took another interest of the 49ers in rival Seattle Seahawks LB Bruce Irvin. He would have bolstered the pass rushing that is in need of help.
It seems likely the 49ers will work on their own free agents first. Ian Williams is a major priority and the team should be looking to sign him to a long term deal. He is a major part of the defensive line and when healthy, he plays very well. With Ian resigned, the team can focus on the pass rush to rebuild the defense. With $60 million in cap space, the 49ers will need to reload on talent after losing a lot of talent last offseason.
