49ers sign QB Thad Lewis to 1-year deal

And we have the San Francisco 49ers first free agent signing of 2016. Try not to get too excited! NFL Network's Rand Getlin is reporting the team has signed quarterback Thad Lewis to a one-year deal.

Lewis re-joins Chip Kelly, under whom he played in 2015. Well, played is a generous term. Lewis did not play any snaps, but did practice with the team. He signed with the Eagles on September 21, 2015, and it appears he played out the season. The one-time Duke quarterback has bounced around the league, starting with the St. Louis Rams in 2010. He appeared in one game with the Cleveland Browns in 2012, and six games with the Buffalo Bills in 2013.

Lewis will compete with Dylan Thompson for some kind of role. Colin Kaepernick remains on the roster, with his future up in the air. It remains to be seen how many QBs the 49ers will carry this fall, but Lewis will get  chance to be one of them.
