The Sean Smith sweepstakes might wrap up today or tomorrow, and the Kansas City Chiefs are not yet prepared to walk away from their cornerback. Chiefs beat writer Terez Paylor is reporting the Chiefs are making a strong push to retain Smith.
Reports today had suggested the Smith sweepstakes are down to the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers. We have not heard hard confirmation on the 49ers involvement, but the speculation is out there. The 49ers and Raiders have significantly more cap space than the Chiefs, but I suspect Kansas City could make a deal work if they really pushed on it.
Smith is likely looking at a deal in excess of $12 million per year. Janoris Jenkins signed a 5-year, $62.5 million deal with the Giants. It is safe to say Smith will likely get a deal near or exceeding that amount. Who actually ends up offering up that kind of cash remains to be seen.
