Joe Staley expects Trent Brown to take over 49ers right tackle role

Fooch's update - Chris Biderman has a better quotation from Staley on this:

"He has to come back with the mindset that it's his position to win," left tackle and team captain Joe Staley said Wednesday. "I know it's going to be a competition, if they bring a guy in free agency or the draft. But (Brown's) mindset has gotta be it's his position to take."

The San Francisco 49ers are conducting their local Pro Day, and part of the media availability includes current players. Joe Staley was among the players available, and he had a chance to weigh in on some of the early offseason questions.

Staley was asked about Anthony Davis and his potential comeback. He told the assembled media he doesn't know anything about it, and has not kept in contact with Davis at all. We continue to wait for something to resolve itself, but it's safe to say we're best just assuming he won't be part of the team, and if he does come back, it could potentially be a quick bonus.

Aside from the Davis situation, Staley said it's expected that Trenton Brown would take over the starting right tackle spot. He moved into the lineup late last season after Erik Pears moved over to right guard. The team has not added any additional tackle talent thus far, and we still don't know what's up with Davis.

All that being said, it would not surprise me at all to see the 49ers invest in a tackle option. Brown could very well win the starting job, but if the 49ers draft a tackle on day two, Brown could move into a swing tackle role 2016. That Friday of the draft might give us a better handle on the 49ers right tackle plans for the coming season.
