What if there was an NFL Draft today, that consisted of only one round where each team could take one player from any other team? Well, absolute chaos would happen of course, and other than NaVorro Bowman, not a single San Francisco 49ers player would actually be drafted in said draft.
But who would the 49ers take? Over at the SB Nation mothership, one of my NFL colleagues, Adam Stites, put together suck a mock draft, with two rules. The first is that picks are made with the idea of helping a team beyond just one season. The second is that previous selections in the draft don't alter a team's thinking, which means a team doesn't have to worry about filling a hole that was created by another team taking one of their players.
You might ... you might not like the player he went with for the 49ers. Not at all.
7. San Francisco 49ers: Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks
The 49ers insist they're keeping Colin Kaepernick and Chip Kelly talked up Blaine Gabbert, but come on ... adding an elite quarterback would be step one in getting the roster back to championship form. Wilson led the Seahawks to victory in the last five matchups against the 49ers, so San Francisco knows exactly what the 27-year-old passer offers. He led the NFL with a 110.1 passer rating in 2015, despite subpar protection in front of him.
Now at this point, I will say I like the pick. I'd love for Cam Newton if I'm going with a quarterback first but he's already gone in this draft. I'd probably take Derek Carr over Wilson but either way, I think it's a good pick. I just think some people aren't going to like it, of course.
It's the Seahawks. It's Russell Wilson who, admittedly, has not impressed on the stat sheet overall in his career. But I think Wilson is one of the smartest guys in the league when he has the football in his hands, and even if that doesn't translate to monster passing numbers, I can't imagine the 49ers going any other way than quarterback with this kind of selection.
Just maybe don't look at this picture.
