2016 NFL Draft results: 49ers pick Louisiana Tech QB Jeff Driskel with sixth round pick

The 49ers have added a developmental prospect at quarterback. The team selected Louisiana Tech QB Jeff Driskel in the sixth round.

The San Francisco 49ers have drafted a quarterback! The team used the first of three sixth round picks on Louisiana Tech product Jeff Driskel. He is the first quarterback the 49ers have drafted since B.J. Daniels in 2013.

The 49ers quarterback position remains a question mark for fans, but clearly not for Trent Baalke. The team has Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, Thad Lewis, and Dylan Thompson currently on the roster. There is still a chance the team trades or releases Kaepernick, but otherwise, that's your group. Driskel is a developmental talent, and as a sixth round pick, it's not like he is guaranteed a roster spot. The 49ers will see what he can do in the offseason workout program and training camp, and then go from there. I fully expect a strong performance in one preseason game that has us all irrationally calling for him to be starting.

His NFL.com scouting report says:

Driskel still has the size, arm strength and athleticism that made him the top-rated quarterback coming out of high school, but he hasn’t experienced enough growth at the position due to his rocky path to the draft. A positive 2015 helped Driskell regain some confidence, but he’s not where he needs to be yet. With his upside and traits, Driskel is worthy of a day three selection and could yield dividends with patience and coaching.
