While it may be very likely the Denver Broncos do not land Colin Kaepernick, be it draft picks, salary cap or anything else barring the trade from, you know, ACTUALLY HAPPENING, they definitely planned ahead. A report from Mary Kay Calbot says that if the Broncos cannot land the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, they have Plan B: Josh McCown.
As in, 1-7 as a starter in 2016, Josh McCown. As in, lost the starting job to Johnny Manziel (who the Broncos won't even sign), Josh McCown.
That Josh McCown.
As bad some may say Colin Kaepernick is, Josh McCown has his own set of issues, mostly stemming on his age (36) and numerous injuries in his career. He wasn't awful in 2016, finishing with a 67.3 completion percentage and a 93 rating, but that was when he actually could play, which was only eight games. He flashed moments of great quarterbacking, but there's not much you can do with him from a development standpoint when he's in the twilight of his career.
Oh yeah, and he's still under contract in Cleveland. So John Elway can wait for the Browns to release him or cough up a draft pick to land the quarterback. But not to worry, McCown makes in the realm of under $5 million, so at least they'll be able to afford him the way they can't afford Kaepernick.
As for Johnny Manziel? Despite Adam Schefter's report that Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak talked to Manziel on Thursday, the Broncos have no interest in signing Johnny Football. So it's either Kap...or McCown. That is the current crop of quarterbacks left folks. If McCown was brought in, it'd clearly be for a stop-gap until the Broncos could get a quarterback developed, or found Sanchez to be better.
Just for clarification, both Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiller were on the Broncos roster not even 3 months ago. If McCown lands in Denver, can you envision a quarterback competition between him and Mark Sanchez for the starting gig?
