In the draft, the 49ers focused on strengthening their offensive line. They spent 3 picks on rookies they hope will shore up the line. Last season, it was apparent that the offensive line was the worst performing unit on the team. The rookies picked will have a chance to make an instant impact. Competition will be fierce for starting spots. The offense could take a step forward just by giving their starting quarterback time in the pocket, which they were not given last season.

All eyes will be focused on the QBs for the rest of the offseason. After all the rumors for the last year or so, Colin Kaepernick actually stayed with the team. He is still working his way back from injury, but there is a bit of curiosity in him being coached by Chip Kelly. Chip has always been able to coach up his QBs and Colin could benefit from that. Chip likes athletic quarterbacks and Colin is one of the most athletic QBs in the league. Blaine Gabbert, who is also quite athletic, will also be in the mix for the starting position. He ended last season as the starting quarterback.

The team didn't use high picks on offensive skill players. They drafted WR Aaron Burbridge and RB Kelvin Taylor in the later rounds. Since there was not much emphasis on upgrading the skill positions, Chip will be tasked in getting more out of the talent already on the team. Carlos Hyde played well before being injured and he is a major key in the offense. The receiver corp will need work. High priced Torrey Smith was underutilized in the offense. Quinton Patton and Bruce Ellington have not made much of an impact. A possible candidate who could flourish under Chip Kelly would be Jarryd Hayne. He has great open field abilities. If any coach could use those abilities, it would be Chip.
