NFL free agency is two months old, but Thursday, May 12 is a big day. Free agents who would have applied to the comp pick formula no longer count as of May 12. I don't expect a huge surge of signings, but I would not be surprised to see a few notable names ink new deals.
Most teams have filled out their 90-man rosters, including the San Francisco 49ers. Of course, given the number of undrafted free agents that have signed on, there is plenty of potential roster fodder. We'll grow deeply attached to the many undrafted free agents on the 49ers roster, but it would not surprise me if we see one or more of them gone before the end of June. It might not be for a veteran free agent, but some modest turnover is to be expected.
In the meantime, here is a list of free agents still available. I broke it down by position, grabbing five or six names for each position. I don't expect the 49ers to suddenly go on a spending spree, but there are some intriguing veterans on the market. Maybe we finally see Ryan Fitzpatrick land somewhere. Maybe Anquan Boldin works something out somewhere. A lot of things could happen sooner rather than later.
