Many years ago, before a lot of folks were visiting Niners Nation, we ran a series of articles in which we voted on an all-time 49ers squad. We did it once over the course of 2008 and 2009, and then started but never completed it in 2012. Now that we're into a relatively quieter period of the offseason, I thought it would be fun to bring this back.
When we last started it up, someone suggested doing an all-underrated team, but that strikes me as a little more difficult to sort through. The 49ers have quite a few locks for the all-time team, but there are still enough interesting positions for discussion. Take a look back at how we did it in that link above, and if you have any suggestions, let me know.
Among the players who were automatic qualifiers previously, we had WR Jerry Rice, DL Leo Nomellini, OT Bob St. Clair, S Ronnie Lott, CB Jimmy Johnson, and OLB Dave Wilcox. And of course, Bill Walsh was the automatic entrant for head coach. Yes, we had a vote for quarterback. I always like the Joe Montana-Steve Young debate, but I can certainly understand why Montana would be an automatic entrant as well. I was always more of a Steve guy than Joe guy, so that is probably why I held out on installing Joe as the automatic qualifier.
Anyway, we'll get started on that in the coming days, but if you have suggestions for different ways to approach it, I'm all ears.
