Golden Nuggets: Going For The Gold

New, comments

Tuesday, May 17th, 2016 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet

Playing football in the NFL is not for everyone. Jarryd Hayne attempted to play NFL football last year after playing Australian rugby his whole career. He joined the team last offseason and made the roster against all odds. During the season, he made waves with his open field ability to make defenders miss and his power runs. He decided to leave the NFL after his one season to complete in the Summer Olympics in Rio.

The 49ers begin their OTAs today. There are a lot of position battles that will be highly contested. A team with a losing record usually has many spots open for competition and the 49ers are exactly in that position. The biggest battles will be on the offensive line and the quarterback position. The offensive line was in shambles last season. Other than Joe Staley's spot, all starting spots are available. It will be interesting to see who separates themselves from the pack.

Another good battle will be for the starting spot alongside NaVorro Bowman. Michael Wilhoite started last season as his partner, but Gerald Hodges took over once Wilhoite went down injured. Add in Stanford product Shayne Skov, Ray-Ray Armstrong, and Nick Bellore into the mix for the job. The competitions for the receiver and cornerback spots will be highly competitive. Other than Torrey Smith, the players on the receiving corp are unproven. The WRs have been a problem spot for the 49ers for years, but the players hope to fix that problem this offseason.
