Golden Nuggets: 1st Day Of OTAs In The Books

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The 1st day of OTAs under Chip Kelly officially kicked off on Tuesday. And the practice lived up to Chip's reputation. It was fast. The offense was running plays in 15 seconds. Blaine Gabbert led the 1st team offense, Thad Lewis led the 2nd unit and Jeff Driskel led the 3rd unit. Colin Kaepernick will be in competition for the starting job, but he is still working his way back from surgery.

The offensive line will have battles for the starting spots. On the 1st day, the 1st team offense ran out an offensive line consisting of Erik Pears at right tackle, Brandon Thomas at right guard, Daniel Kilgore at center, Zane Beadles at left guard and the cornerstone of the line Joe Staley at left tackle. The 2nd unit trotted out Trent Brown, Andrew Tiller, Marcus Martin, Ian Silberman, and Colin Kelly. Joshua Garnett, the rookie guard who was drafted in the 1st round of the draft, is unable to attend until he graduates Stanford.

On defense, NaVorro Bowman was joined by Gerald Hodges as the starting inside linebackers. Jimmie Ward started as the starting right corner in the 1st team defense. In the nickel, he moved over to the slot and Tramaine Brock, the starting left corner, was teamed up with Dontae Johnson.

The rookies took their snaps with the 3rd team units as they play catch up with the 49er veterans. They will have their chances later on in the offseason to work with the other units in a battle for roster spots.
