One of the key members of the 49ers the last few seasons has been reassigned a new position. Chip Kelly's offense does not utilize a fullback and that meant trouble for Bruce Miller. He is taking this opportunity and working on being a tight end. He is a good pass catcher and a good run blocker, which could make the transition easier. Bruce was the Swiss army knife of the offense. Now he will use all his catching and blocking skills at another position to help the team.
Another player getting used to another position is Jimmie Ward. Most of his career has been spent as a nickel corner. During OTAs, he is spending most of his time as an outside corner. It seems that the team wants him to be accustomed to play outside on base downs and then play in the slot in nickel packages. Some of the best receivers play in the slot and the 49ers look to use him to play those receivers. The team wants him out on the field as much as possible and putting him as the starting corner would do that.
The 49ers are looking to utilize their best players as often as possible. If that can only be accomplished by switching positions, then that's what will be done.
