Tank Carradine showing off nice pass rush move in drill

New, comments

Defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil thinks he can work in a variety of areas. He showed some pass rush work on Wednesday.

The San Francisco 49ers are back at practice, and that means plenty of drills. The big workouts are team offense vs. defense, but the drills give us a little look at what they're up to on the field. Ryan Sakamoto tweeted some videos from various drills, and I wanted to point one out in particular.

The outside linebackers were doing some drills, and this video features Tank Carradine, Marcus Rush, and Jason Fanaika. Tank has more time in the NFL and was a highly prized edge rusher in college, but the difference in how they get to the fake QB is still something to behold.

Defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil chatted with the media on Wednesday, and was asked how he sees Tank fitting in, and if he is working as an outside linebacker.

“He’s living in the outside backer room, but he’s a very versatile player. He’s going to live in both rooms for us. So, I see him on early downs, him helping us out some at outside backer and then when we get into later downs or sub situations, he’s a guy that can play on the edge or he can slide inside and provide some interior rush for us.”

Tank is a free agent after this season, so it is kind of a big year for him. The team bulked him up early in his career, and that did not pan out. Now, they've had him drop down into the 260s, and hopefully that means a significant addition to the pass rush. We'll see how much he can build on heading into training camp.
