The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their fifth OTA day of the offseason workout program on Wednesday, and this one was open to the public. Jennifer Chan was on hand and will have a full recap in the morning, but in the meantime, I'm back with another look at the various practice reports already published. I have linked them down below.
Jimmie Ward sticks at cornerback
The 49ers had Ward working on the outside once again, on the right side. The difference this time around is that when the team went into their nickel package, Ward stayed outside. Wednesday saw Chris Davis getting nickel work (and not doing well, according to the reports). The second team cornerbacks were Dontae Johnson and Rashard Robinson on the outside, and Keith Reaser in the slot role.
Quarterback situation
Grant Cohn was down on Blaine Gabbert's performance on Wednesday. The 49ers ran some drills to simulate long-armed pass rushers, which forced the quarterbacks to look for open throwing lanes. Cohn said it was not a pretty day for Gabbert on this drills. There were a pair of third down conversions from Gabbert to Torrey Smith in red zone drills, but time ran out before the team could get into the end zone.
Eric Rogers showing some things
The beat writers have repeatedly mentioned how big Rogers is, and it seems like he is making an impression in actual football things as well. He had a solid performance on Wednesday, and considering how well he performed in Canada, would it be all that shocking for him to emerge as a potential impact player? Here's some video from Maiocco.
Special teams
Bruce Ellington and Bryce Treggs were the only two players handling punt returns on Wednesday. But what I found more interesting was that Jeff Driskel got some work in the punt coverage and punt blocking units. This reminds me a little of when Cody Pickett did special teams work for the 49ers. Those were certainly the days!
Alumni appearance
Former defensive end Andre Carter was on hand working with the defensive line. Carter is part of a fellowship program, which is something the 49ers have been involved with for some time. My guess is Carter will be on hand through training camp, but we'll see what happens in August.

Injury report
- Ahmad Brooks is going through walkthroughs, and then moving into rehab work. Defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil did not specify the injury.
- Last week, Devon Cajuste landed awkwardly after a catch. He was running on the same side field where Brooks was rehabbing. Barrows does not think the injury looks too serious.
- Will Redmond took part in individual work, but did not do team or group work
- Glenn Dorsey continues his rehab work
